Week 13 Blog - April 24th

Questions: -What did you learn this week? To start the class we went back to the plunger push activity, trying to figure out why the plunge sticks to the table. We found that the plunge sticks to the table when being pushed because the air trapped between the table and the plunge gets pushed out leaving a pressure inside the plunger to the table. This week we also learned more about melting and condensation. We looked at different online simulations to create our prediction and made a flip video at the end of discussion to share with the class our ideas. My group personally did the melting ice!  -What parts did you find clear and what did you find confusing? I found everything clear this week! Nothing confusing.  -How can you apply this in your future? I can apply this in the future as I can use both activities, the melting ice on wood and metal, and the condensation with a cold drink in a summer day, and allow my students to also make a video explaining the "why". Questions:   What did you learn this week? This week we learned about how different substances have different types of densities and learned that the higher the density the more compact the particles are in the object. For instance a solid is very compactes, a liquid is kinda compactes, and a gas is very spread out. This is a factor of deciding if something is more dense than other objects.  What did you find clear? confusing? Today in lab we also worked with M&Ms and observed them in water of which color would spread the fastest. I found this a little confusing as we saw which color spread but we never got the answer specifically why of some colors spreading faster than others. Although for this mini lab I found it clear why the M&Ms dissolve in water. The sugary coat on M&Ms are less dense than the water allowing the color of the M&M to spread. Another thing we observed was the difference in M&Ms dissolving in sugary water and normal water. We saw that th...

Questions:  -What did you learn this week?  Today In discussion we talked about the differences in learning from grade levels. We then went into the depth of explaining the properties of matter and discussed each of them we came up with. Today we also went through property stations. We got to learn which items conduct electricity, was magnetic, their mass, their volume, and if the items floated or sank. - Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? In some of the stations we learned about mass and volume. Previously from doing this I already knew that bigger the object the bigger the mass and volume would be. I found this activity to help with practice with explaining and investigating why the bigger the object is more mass and volume than the smaller object. - How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future? I can use these stations in the future. I felt that all of these stations were very easy and elementary friendly, besides the e...

Questions: What did you learn this week? /  What are questions you still have? I learned about reactions of chemistry during these following activities: From these stations, I learned the importance of asking questions and remaining curious.  I also learned about more of out jobs as an elementary teacher. We want our students t be curious and interested in our work. We need to set out students up to be successful by giving them the "Why" of things, and teach them how to ask and answer their own questions. How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future? I can use these activities to use in the future to show the reactions of chemistry. I feel as if these visual activities helped us to learn and can give us more information of why that reaction occurred. For elementary students, i would maybe alter some of these stations as I wouldn't want them working with vinegar and some other tools, so maybe it would be more of a class work not groups. These a...
